AI and the workplace: How to start implementing the technology

Artificial Intelligence is everywhere these days, from conferences highlighting new tools to bills being passed on state and federal levels, to our computers, phones, vehicles and houses.

Chances are, you’ve started talking about AI in your office. This technology has the power to change the workforce in many ways. While we know in some sectors, employees are nervous that they could eventually be replaced by robots, there are many more reasons to keep your human employees around.

But there are also ways business leaders can utilize artificial intelligence to move their businesses forward.

Artificial intelligence can create efficiencies and help with data analysis, workforce development, risk management and customer service. It can give companies a competitive advantage. Leaders who aren’t already should seriously consider implementing AI into their business now.

Here are a few things to think about as you get started.

Define your objectives

As a business leader, you’re faced with daily challenges that can be difficult to navigate and juggle — and the last thing you want is another project to manage. Your first step before diving into AI should be considering what your objectives are.

Do you want to create more efficiencies for a certain department? Are you hoping to improve customer experience or cybersecurity? Have you noticed your team runs into roadblocks when it comes to making decisions?

Whatever the reason is, be clear with your team about the goals you’re setting for the company with this new technology. Goals with clear metrics or data associated with them will help measure success later.

Consider your team, tools and technologies

Artificial Intelligence is a broad reaching term that includes any technology that allows machines — especially computers — to simulate problem-solving and human intelligence. Chances are, there’s already AI being used in some fashion within your company.

But if you’re thinking about utilizing this technology to help with your objectives, you’ll want to be thoughtful about how to implement it.

Research the different options that would make sense to experiment with based on those goals. If you need help with where to start, you should work with your managed service provider, who can provide guidance on what your options are.

Identify a few people in your company who enjoy trying new things and give them one to three specific tasks that you want them to complete using AI. They can also become your in-house “experts" and help train more of your staff in the future.

Stay informed and compliant

This might seem obvious, but would be remiss not to mention. Using fast changing technology in a fast-changing world, the rules — both legal and ethical — will continue to change. Consider identifying one or two folks who can commit to staying informed on any changes for artificial intelligence as it affects your business, and will help hold your team accountable.

Foster a culture of innovation

This is true not only for artificial intelligence, but for all aspects of your business. You want employees who are excited to come to work every day — and one of the best ways to stoke that enthusiasm is by allowing people to try new things and take chances.

While it wouldn’t be advisable to move an entire operation to an AI system on day one, this is a great opportunity to allow team members to experiment, sharpen their skills, and learn new ways of doing things.

These trial runs can only help your business and help you build a better relationship with your team. And who knows, maybe you’ll even have some fun doing it.

Implementing artificial intelligence thoughtfully and strategically can significantly enhance your business operations. This approach not only addresses immediate challenges but also positions your business for sustained growth and competitiveness in a rapidly evolving landscape.

Embracing AI today means investing in a smarter, more efficient, and innovative future for your company.
