The German discount supermarket chain Aldi has signed a lease to move into the former Big Lots store in Portland’s Pine Tree Shopping Center on Brighton Avenue.
It will be the chain’s first in Maine. The expected opening date has not been announced.
Aldi will occupy 25,245 square feet, one of the larger sites in the center. Neighboring retailers include a Lowe’s, O’Reilly Auto Parts, JOANN Fabrics and Crafts, a Dollar store, an Applebee’s restaurant and Aspen Dental. The store will be at 1100 Brighton Ave.
Aldi is headquartered in Essen, Germany, and operates 12,500 stores around the world. In the U.S., it has over 2,400 stores in 38 states.
The company’s U.S. base is in Batavia, Ill. There are nine Aldi stores in New Hampshire, including locations in Dover and Newington. In Florida, Aldi operates over 200 stores.
The Pine Tree Center is managed by the New York-based Brixmore Property Group.
Aldi touts itself as a discount grocery store. Some 90% of the store’s food items are under the Aldi label, and all are marketed as being free of synthetic coloring, MSG and partially hydrogenated oils.
In addition to grocery, health care and pet care products, some stores sell a limited selection of apparel and home furnishings. The stores do not usually include pharmacies.
