Alfred rep. cited for campaign fund violations
York County Rep. David Burns faces a criminal investigation by the state’s attorney general after the ethics commission found him responsible for several campaign finance violations.
Following an investigation, the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices found Burns, R-Alfred, committed seven civil violations of the use of Clean Election Act funds, including transferring public money to his personal account, using the money for personal expenses and giving false documents to investigators, the Portland Press Herald reported. He was ordered to repay nearly $3,000 in improperly spent funds, and he will also face fines of an as-yet-unspecified amount. According to the committee, Burns also reported campaign expenditures that were never made and falsified a letter in an attempt to show expenses. He was elected last year.
The attorney general will now investigate, and Burns’ lawyer said he will cooperate with the investigation, but declined to comment on details of Burns’ election spending.
