Allegiant Air today said it is expanding its service at Bangor International Airport, news that comes just a month after two airlines cut service at the airport.
The Las Vegas-based low-cost airline is adding twice-weekly nonstop service between Bangor and the Tampa Bay area on Nov. 20, Airport Director Rebecca Hupp told Mainebiz. The one-way introductory price will be $89.99, she said.
Tampa Bay is the second most popular destination for travelers in Bangor, Hupp said. Allegiant currently offers service between Bangor and the Orlando area, the airport's number one destination.
The airport also pitched Allegiant on providing service to the Fort Lauderdale area, but the airline decided to focus on the Tampa Bay route, Hupp said. "We hope they do well in our market and continue to expand," she said.
In early August, both Continental Airlines and Delta Air Lines cut back their service at the airport. Continental pulled out completely when it killed its service to Newark, N.J., while Delta discontinued its service to Boston's Logan International Airport.
