Alliance Press to merge with MaineToday Media, close Brunswick print shop

Alliance Press is expected to close its 54,000-square-foot Brunswick printing facility in early 2019.

The Bangor Daily News reported Tuesday that Reade Brower, who owns the commercial printer, six daily newspapers and 19 weekly publications in Maine, said Alliance will merge with the South Portland printing operations of Brower’s MaineToday Media.

Most Alliance employees have been offered new jobs at MaineToday, CEO and Publisher Lisa DeSisto told the BDN.

The newspaper group publishes the Maine Sunday Telegram, Portland Press Herald, Kennebec Journal and Morning Sentinel. The BDN is the only Maine daily not owned by Brower, but the paper contracts out its printing to his Sun Media Group in Lewiston.

Sun Media will also pick up some of Alliance’s work.

“We are days away from going live with a new press in South Portland to accommodate the commercial printing work from Alliance,” DeSisto wrote in an email to the BDN. “While the majority of work will go to South Portland, some of the work will be printed at the Sun Media Group facility in Lewiston.”

Russell Libbey, Alliance’s general manager, will join the MaineToday Media leadership team, she added.

The Times Record will remain in the Alliance facility, at 3 Business Parkway, which will also serve as a carrier depot for delivery of the Press Herald.
