U.S. Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, and 40 Democratic caucus members have written to acting Social Security Administration Commissioner Leland Dudek asking for clarification on the potential shuttering of hundreds of field offices across the country.
There are eight Social Security offices in Maine.
"We write with concern in response to public reporting indicating that you plan to close many field offices this year amidst the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)’s attack on the Social Security Administration," the lawmakers wrote in their April 25 letter.
"Each day, approximately 17,000 people visit a SSA field office for assistance," the letter continued. "Closing any of these field offices will make it harder for individuals to access their benefits.”
The letter listed all of the Social Security offices in the country and asked that Dudek identify which offices are on the closure list, and why, and asked for a response by May 6.
“Given SSA’s recent attempts to close field offices — only to reverse course after public outcry and claim it never had plans to close offices — will you commit to keeping each one of these offices open?”
In a related statement, King criticized the dismissal earlier this year of 7,000 Social Security employees as "disrespectful, destructive and dangerous.”
King’s office says Maine has the highest percentage of seniors in the country. He has called the Trump administration’s cuts to Social Security staff “the most direct assault on this vital program in its almost 100-year history.”
