Amazon to tax Maine customers starting April 1

Amazon will start collecting a 5.5% sales tax from Maine customers beginning April 1.

Commissioner George Gervais of the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development said Amazon’s decision to begin collecting and remitting sales tax in Maine is “welcome news to Maine retailers and consumers.”

"Maine businesses can go toe-to-toe with the very best out-of-state companies, provided they are competing on an equal playing field,” he said in a written statement. “Amazon's decision to collect and remit sales tax to the state of Maine is an important first step in leveling the playing field. The increased revenue will help the LePage administration and lawmakers in making further reductions to Maine's income tax, especially in light of the passage of the damaging Question 2 tax hike. Now, more than ever, improving Maine's business competitiveness is of vital importance to growing our economy for all Maine people."

WMTW News 8 reported that Amazon, which has expanded the number of states from which it collects sale tax in recent months, also will begin collecting sales taxes in Hawaii, Idaho and New Mexico next month.
