The Portland International Jetport announced Monday that American Airlines, the jetport’s largest carrier, will begin nonstop jet service to New York City’s LaGuardia Airport starting April 3, 2018.
The new service will be operated twice daily on 50-seat regional jets.
“American Airlines announcement today is a great win for the Portland community,” Paul Bradbury, airport director, said in a news release. “We will now have four airlines servicing our largest market, providing schedule flexibility and competitive airfares for the Maine traveler.” American Airlines is the largest carrier at the Portland International Jetport with existing service to Charlotte, N.C., Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.
Monday’s announcement means American will service four nonstop destinations out of Portland International Jetport and will add the jetport’s largest nonstop market, New York City, to the list of destinations flight passengers in Maine can access via oneworld alliance.
In 2016, the jetport set an all-time record year for traffic with 1,785,649 passengers, surpassing 2015’s total of 1,728,746 passengers by 3.2%. The 2016 milestone marked a 1.3% increase over the previous record of 1,762,925 passengers set in 2008.
