Andover businessman enters governor race

Andover business owner Kevin Scott has gathered enough signatures to put his name on the November ballot as an independent candidate for governor.

Scott on May 21 turned in more than 4,000 valid signatures, according to the Morning Sentinel. Along with his wife, Scott owns Recruiting Resources International, which matches technology companies with engineers as temporary contractors or permanent employees. As governor, Scott said he would bring predictability to the state's tax and business regulation structures and streamline the state's education funding mechanism. He cited lowering the state's utility rates and raising the education level of the work force as two of Maine's top challenges.

Scott has received about $2,000 in campaign donations, with a goal of raising $20,000 before the election, according to the paper. Also running as independent candidates for governor are environmental lawyer and former Carter administration official Eliot Cutler and Gorham businessman Shawn Moody.
