Appraisals on BNAS property cleared

The reuse plan for the Brunswick Naval Air Station has been approved by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, a necessary step in clearing the way for the base to be converted into private property.

HUD, the only federal agency that can veto a base-closure plan, announced its approval to the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority on Tuesday, according to The Times Record in Brunswick. By federal law, any base-closure plan is required to address housing and social services needs for the homeless. Per the approved plan, those buying property at the base must put $600 per buildable acre into a fund to support the homeless services provider Tedford Housing in Brunswick. The fund is expected to total $800,000.

The BNAS approval allows the Navy to begin performing appraisals on the property as part of the process to sell it to private owners when it closes in 2011, Steve Levesque, executive director of MRRA, told the paper.
