FairPoint lowers rates

FairPoint Communications will lower Maine phone rates beginning in December to meet certain conditions of its purchase of Verizon's landlines.

Residential and business customers in parts of the state formerly served by Verizon will see a one-time credit in December of $8.47 to $32.10, depending on the calling plan, and in late January base rates will decrease, according to the Associated Press. FairPoint's cuts, some more than 20%, are part of the sale agreement approved by the Maine Public Utilities Commission and resolve a long dispute between the state and Verizon over rates.

At the end of January, when FairPoint takes over billing from Verizon, FairPoint will reduce rates rather than give customers an automatic credit, the AP reported.
