April home sales slide 24%

Home sales continued their two-month decline in April, falling 24% compared with the same month last year.

A total of 758 existing single-family homes were sold in Maine last month, down from 994 one year ago, according to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. The median sales price also dropped nearly 3% to $160,750. Home sales were buoyed in April 2010 by the federal homebuyer tax credit, which expired at the end of that month. Maine home sales fell 21% in March and a little more than 2% in February.

In the Northeast, home sales dropped 7.5% in April, according to The Associated Press. Nationally, home sales dropped less than 1%, and the median sales price fell 5% to $163,700.
