The winning architect of a contest to redesign a block of Portland’s Old Port has proposed to double its footprint, add a skywalk and open space for housing, offices or hotel rooms.
The Portland Press Herald reported that the multistory marketplace on Wharf Street has been proposed by David Lloyd, principal of Portland-based Archetype Architects. Lloyd was selected in October as the winning architect by developer Dream Port 3 LLC, which owns the buildings at 432, 434, 436 and 446 Fore St. and 42 and 50 Wharf St. The buildings currently include Buck's Naked BBQ, Gorgeous Gelato and other commercial tenants.
While no formal proposals have been submitted to the city, Lloyd’s concept imagines adding new floors to the buildings, possibly opening space for hotel rooms, offices or housing and nearly doubling the buildings’ current 50,000-square foot space.
After being foreclosed on in 2011, the buildings were purchased for $5.6 million by Dream Port 3 LLC, an investment and development arm of U.S. Real Estate Advisors in New Jersey.
