A federal lawsuit filed Thursday in New York takes aim at a private equity firm and nationwide dental clinic that has seven locations in Maine.
The Associated Press reported that Aspen Dental and its controlling private equity firm, Leonard Green and Partners, face a lawsuit for alleged violations of a law that requires clinics to be owned by dentists who actively perform procedures onsite.
The suit filed Thursday is on behalf of 11 people in 11 states, but the AP reported that lawyers are seeking class action status that could cover tens of thousands of current and former patients.
The lawsuit alleges that patients were pressured into expensive procedures after being attracted to the clinics by free exam and X-ray promotions.
A company representative told the AP that she had not yet seen the lawsuit and declined to comment for the story late Thursday.
Aspen has clinics in 22 states; clinics in Maine are in Portland, South Portland, Biddeford, Topsham, Bangor, Waterville and Augusta, according to its website.
