After a year of planning and months of construction — and just weeks before holiday gift-giving — Maine's first Costco warehouse store will open its doors on Friday.
The 161,000-square-foot location is at 455 Downs Road, Scarborough, within the growing Downs mixed-use development. It is expected to have 225 employees.
Costco Wholesale Corp. (Nasdaq: COST) operates 867 warehouse, membership-only stores worldwide, 596 of which are in the U.S. including 16 in New England. Currently, the only states without a Costco branch are Rhode Island, West Virginia, Wyoming and, at least until Nov. 17, Maine.
According to the National Retail Federation, Costco ranks No. 3 among the largest U.S. retailers, behind Walmart and Amazon.
The chain, based in Issaquah, Wash., carries clothing, toys, electronics, furniture, appliances, yard equipment and other household goods, while also selling groceries in bulk sizes at discount prices.
In addition, the Scarborough store will feature a gas station, pharmacy, tire center and optical department. Also onsite will be one of Costco's famous food courts, which have been selling hot dogs at $1.50 a piece since the company's founding 40 years ago.
During its Nov. 17 grand opening, the Scarborough store will be open from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Afterward, hours will be Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
On Nov. 24, the store will also hold its first Black Friday sale and will be open from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
In addition to its other types of retailing, Costco will be the second major supermarket to open in recent weeks in Scarborough. Last month, Hannaford opened a store in a former Shaw’s Supermarket building at 417 Payne Road. Hannaford already had a supermarket about 2 miles away in Scarborough’s Oak Hill area.
Scarborough is also home to branches of big-box competitor Walmart Inc. and its own warehouse offshoot, Sam's Club.
Customer memberships at Costco range in price from $60 to $120 per year, and $30 digital memberships are available to new members who choose automatic renewal.
Costco (Nasdaq: COST), which is based in Issaquah, Wash., had sales of $237.71 in the fiscal year ended Sept. 3. It has 127 million Costco cardholders and 310,840 employees worldwide.
