The former Moosehead Furniture plant in Monson has again been sold at auction, this time to the owner of a slate company for $50,000.
Carl Vainio of Monson Maine Slate Co. owns much of the property adjacent to the Moosehead plant and plans to turn it into a slate mill, according to news channel WCSH-6. Vainio's company sells architectural and landscaping products made out of slate, and he told the news channel that there's plenty of rock nearby to quarry. He said he hopes to make the mill a major employer in the town, but did not say how many jobs he wants to create. Moosehead Furniture, formerly Moosehead Manufacturing, closed in January 2010.
Mortgage holder Machias Savings Bank in April announced yesterday's auction, after a previous bid to buy the plant fell through. Last August at another auction, Louise Jonaitis, owner of a number of wood products facilities in the state, submitted a winning bid of $1.05 million for the property and its equipment with plans to restart furniture making. But she dropped those plans because of environmental problems at the property, and instead purchased only the equipment, which she sold at an auction in December. Jonaitis has leased space in the Monson Community Center to open a retail outlet for Moosehead Furniture, which should open this summer.
