Parkview Adventist Medical Center in Brunswick lost nearly $7.6 million between December 2006 and December 2007, according to the Times Record in Brunswick.
When the independent auditing firm Berry, Dunn, McNeil & Parker released its report in May, auditors stated that the hospital's financial losses "raise substantial doubt about the medical center's ability to continue," the paper reports.
The past fiscal year was the fourth year out of the last five that the hospital has run a deficit, resulting largely from fewer patients, the paper said. But Parkview President and Chief Executive Officer Ted Lewis told the Times Record that a proposed affiliation with Central Maine Healthcare Corp. in Lewiston -- which still requires state approval -- as well as a $5.6 million loan from Central Maine Healthcare, staffing cuts in February and a pending $3 million state reimbursement in MaineCare payments, would help the hospital's cash shortage.
