Racetrack tries again for slots

Scarborough Downs plans to push for a large retail and office development in Scarborough if the town approves slot machines at the harness race track.

Developer Gene Beaudoin of New England Expedition-Scarborough and Sharon Terry, owner of Scarborough Downs, will present conceptual drawings of the 235-acre development to the city council tonight. The development near the Haigis Parkway would create a town center linking U.S. Route One and Payne Road, and possibly include land donated to the town for a community center or public safety building, according to the Portland Press Herald.

The plan, however, hinges on whether the town will allow Scarborough Downs to have slot machines. In 2003, Scarborough voters nixed local slots by 53% to 47%, and the chair of the city council is now considering an advisory referendum to test the waters before the council spends time considering the new proposal.
