A composites manufacturer in Augusta is asking for help from the city to fund a new project that could create up to 100 jobs.
Kenway Corp. is asking the city to support a $300,000 Community Development Block Grant for a new manufacturing technology to make parts for large composite wind turbine blades, according to the Kennebec Journal. The CDBG grant, for which a municipality must apply on a company's behalf, would allow Kenway to hire 10 new people to continue developing the technology, Ian Kopp, Kenway's vice president and general manager, told city councilors on Thursday. Another 100 jobs could be created over the next two years, Kopp said.
Kenway won the American Composites Manufacturing Association's 2009 Award for Composites Excellence for the anti-warping technology. The $1.8 million project could help the company compete with the overseas companies that currently make wind turbine blades, Kopp said. Kenway anticipates the project will hit commercialization in 2010.
