TABOR backers call for probe

The group pushing for voters to pass Question 4, or TABOR, is asking the state to launch an investigation of two Maine lawmakers attempting to defeat it.

The leaders of TABOR NOW are asking Attorney General Janet Mills to begin a criminal investigation into the offices of Senate President Elizabeth Mitchell and House Speaker Hannah Pingree, according to the Associated Press. The TABOR campaign claims documents obtained through a Freedom of Access Act request show taxpayer money and legislative staff time were used to fight Question 4 as well as Question 2 on auto excise tax reduction. Mills has not yet said whether the investigation will take place, and Pingree and Mitchell have not commented on the claims.

The group also filed a complaint with the state ethics commission against the city of South Portland, claiming the city council may have used taxpayer money to send out fliers to residents urging them to vote no on Questions 2 and 4, according to news channel WGME 13.
