Augusta pitches plan to increase downtown patrols

The city of Augusta is proposing to spend more than $14,000 to increase police patrols downtown after merchants complained about various safety issues with vagrants.

The Kennebec Journal reported that the proposal will be considered by the Augusta City Council on Thursday, asking them whether or not they would like to spend extra tax dollars on overtime for police officers patrolling downtown.

Several downtown merchants and workers approached the council last week to see how the city could help with safety issues. They described various problems with vagrants, including drug dealing, public defecation, prostitution and assaults on pedestrians.
