Augusta-to-Boston flights resume after construction
After two months of reconstruction work, the main runway at the Augusta State Airport has reopened, and flights to Boston can now resume. The 5,100-foot runway reopened Friday afternoon following a $7.5 million, federally funded safety improvement project.
During reconstruction work, the airport's shorter runway was open, but it wasn't long enough to accommodate commercial flights to Boston, according to the Kennebec Journal. Cape Air was unable to offer service in May or June, but was able to resume flights on Sunday. Airport Manager John Guimond said the airport's bookings are within 6% of last year's despite the two-month runway closure, and that it has more than 1,000 bookings for July. Cape Air runs four flights daily between Augusta and Boston.
The work included repaving the runway and installing new lights and other systems.
