Backyard Farms bringing back furloughed workers

The Madison-based tomato farm, Backyard Farms, expects to bring back 60 to 70 workers furloughed earlier this year, and plans to have its tomatoes back on grocery shelves by January.

The Kennebec Journal reported the company expects to have two full greenhouses of tomato plants operational by the end of next week. The furloughs followed a series of crop problems, beginning with a whitefly infestation that destroyed a crop in July. The company destroyed nearly half a million tomato plants with the infestation. A second crop didn’t meet the greenhouse farm’s quality standards and was subsequently destroyed as well.

The company typically produces over 27 million pounds of tomatoes a year and is the only year-round tomato producer in New England, supplying stores like Walmart, Whole Foods and Hannaford.
