Backyard Farms, the company that operates a year-round greenhouse in Madison, said this morning it will begin hiring 75 additional employees this month to accommodate an expansion that began last October.
The company, the largest greenhouse grower of vine-ripened tomatoes in New England, plans to open its second greenhouse this summer, which will give it a total of 42 acres of growing space and 175 employees. Roy Lubetkin, president and CEO, said in a press release that the expansion will allow the company to double its year-round tomato production.
Backyard Farms also said today that it has opened a corporate office in Portland where the company's senior-level business strategy, sales, marketing and finance employees are based.
Since its first crop in 2007, Backyard Farms has produced more than 30 million pounds of tomatoes for sale across the Northeastern U.S., approximately 35% of which were sold in Maine.
