Dennis Bailey, the president of a Portland public relations firm and a former consultant for two gubernatorial hopefuls, has admitted to being one of the creators of a website that disparaged Independent candidate Eliot Cutler.
On Thursday, Bailey, president of Savvy Inc., admitted his role in creating The Cutler Files, three days after the state ethics commission voted to fine him $200 for violating election law. The Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices did not name the two anonymous creators of the website, but said that it would likely reveal the identity of the person fined unless an appeal was filed. Through his blog, SavvySpin, Bailey said the website, which called Cutler a "phony and a fraud," was "launched with all the best intentions that sort of backfired." He claimed Cutler was misrepresenting himself and his record, and that the website was intended to provide voters with information he accused the mainstream media of ignoring. Bailey was a consultant for Independent candidate Shawn Moody and for Democratic candidate Rosa Scarcelli during the primary campaign.
The Portland Press Herald and the Sun Journal have both named Thom Rhoads, Scarcelli's husband, as the website's other co-creator, an allegation Rhoads has denied. The ethics commission has still not officially released the names of the creators, saying they won't do so until its next meeting on Jan. 27, according to MaineToday Media.
