Baldacci: 'Growth and opportunity' ahead

Gov. John Baldacci delivered his final State of the State address last night, characterizing the future of the state as "one of resurgence, growth and opportunity."

In his last such address as governor, Baldacci acknowledged the tough economic situation the state is in, but expressed optimism for the state's ability to fuel job growth and expand its alternative energy industry. The state's efforts in growing its wind, tidal and biofuels industries will create new jobs in Maine and allow the state to capitalize on its natural resources, he said. Baldacci also touted the Great Maine Forest Initiative to boost rural economies. "We can't be satisfied with an economy that favors one region or one industry," he said. He reiterated his position against raising taxes to balance the state budget and highlighted his efforts to streamline state government.
