Ban on shrimp fishing in Maine extended for third year

Federal regulators have canceled commercial shrimp fishing in the Gulf of Maine for a third winter in a row due to continuingly depleted populations.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission decided Monday to continue the moratorium on fishing shrimp in the gulf that it put in place in December 2013. The commission’s shrimp technical committee said in a report in November recommending an extension of the moratorium that the warming of New England’s waters makes for an "increasingly inhospitable" environment for shrimp.

A commission spokeswoman told the BDN that the estimated numbers for shrimp in the Gulf of Maine from 2012 to 2015 were “the lowest on record” over the past 32 years.

The Maine Coast Fishermen’s Association said in a statement to the BDN that the continued closure of the fishery has “a huge economic impact” on Maine fishermen. Many fishermen have historically relied on shrimp for income through the winter, the association said.
