Bangor breaks ground on arena

Bangor city officials yesterday broke ground on a new $58.6 million arena and convention center, approved by residents in May.

The center includes 5,800 fixed seats with a maximum capacity of 8,050, as well as an attached 16,000-square-foot convention center, to replace the aging auditorium and civic center in Bass Park. The city's share of proceeds from Hollywood Slots and a portion of funds from a downtown tax increment financing district will pay for the project. In June, the city tapped Pittsfield-based Cianbro Corp. to build the arena, which is scheduled to be completed by fall 2013, according to the Bangor Daily News.

The arena is expected to create 400 permanent jobs and generate $26 million for the local economy.
