BIW nets $111M for destroyer work

The U.S. Navy has awarded Bath Iron Works a $110.8 million contract modification for additional work on the new DDG 1000 destroyer, following news of an agreement for a full contract for the next two ships in the program.

The money will allow the shipyard to purchase materials and fund engineering and support services for the second and third destroyers in the class, known as DDG 1001 and DDG 1002, U.S. Sen. Susan Collins announced in a release. Collins recently visited BIW to celebrate news that the Navy and BIW's parent company, General Dynamics, reached a contract agreement for the two ships after months of negotiations. BIW is currently building the first ship in the line.

The contracts for the three DDG 1000 ships will total more than $3 billion, according to Sen. Collins.
