George D. Carlisle, former president of timberlands management firm Prentiss & Carlisle in Bangor, has died at the age of 98 after a battle with cancer.
Carlisle, a Bangor High School and University of Maine graduate, in 1967 was named president of the company his father co-founded in 1924. He became chairman of the board in 1982 when his son, David, became president, according to the company's website. His work in the industry included advocating for actions to protect Maine forestlands from the invasive spruce budworm in 1975, supporting the hiring of Canadians for Maine timber operations in 1977, and supporting the controversial Tree Growth Tax in 1978, the Bangor Daily News reported.
Carlisle was also well known for his civic and philanthropic work; just this year, he donated $500,000 to Eastern Maine Medical Center's Lafayette Family Cancer Center in Brewer, and attended the dedication of the George D. Carlisle Family Infusion Center. Mayor of Bangor in 1948, Carlisle also served on a number of area boards and organizations, including the Bangor School Board, the city council, the Eastern Maine Forest Forum and the Millinocket Trust Co. board of trustees. He also served as president of the University of Maine Foundation for 16 years.
