Disaster aid available for farmers

Farmers in a handful of Maine counties impacted by Hurricane Irene are now eligible for U.S. Department of Agriculture disaster assistance.

The USDA has designated Oxford and York counties as disaster counties, allowing farmers there to apply for assistance from the Farm Service Agency, including FSA emergency loans and the Supplemental Revenue Assistance Payments program, U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud said in a press release. In addition, farmers in the following counties can apply for aid for crop losses because of a disaster in 2010: Aroostook, Hancock, Knox, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Somerset, Waldo and Washington.

Farmers should contact the Maine FSA office at 990-9140 or visit the FSA website to see if they are eligible and to get more information.
