Bangor commits $1M to upgrade Wayfair building
The city of Bangor will spend close to $1 million to update the former L.L.Bean call center location in preparation for its new tenant, the Boston-based home goods e-commerce storefront Wayfair.
On Monday night, the city council approved using up to $1 million in general obligation bonds to fund improvements to the 30,000-square-foot building, including replacing the roof, relocating and repairing aging sewer pipes, improving the parking lot and installing new heating controls.
The city’s economic development director, Tanya Emery, said the work was needed regardless of whether a new tenant was found for the building after L.L.Bean announced its departure in 2014, according to the Bangor Daily News.
In February, Wayfair announced that it would be bringing 450 jobs to the Bangor location in addition to 500 new jobs to the Brunswick Landing Business campus.
Upgrades to the building located at 689 Maine Ave. are scheduled to begin on May 1, with Wayfair moving in the first week of August.
