Bangor Parks & Recreation is looking for feedback on how to update the Sawyer Arena and Recreation Center.
The aging center could be renovated or it could be replaced.
The city's Parks & Rec department is working with BerryDunn, CHA Architecture and MacLaughlin Management & Design to develop a feasibility study for how to proceed.
Sawyer Arena started as an outdoor hockey rink in the early 1990s and was maintained by the Bangor Youth Hockey Association. Over the years, walls were added along with an ice chilling system. The city acquired the rink in the late 1990s and added new locker rooms in 2003.
The Parks and Recreation Center has been the home of the Parks and Recreation Department since 1995. The current building was a former National Guard Armory with original construction during the late 1930s or early 1940s.
Initial renovations were completed in the mid-to-late 1990s and included the addition of a repair shop, an enclosed heated wash bay, additional office space and restrooms, a maintenance staff lunchroom and safety upgrades.
Additional renovations were completed in 2010 to accommodate the Kids Cave before and after school program. Currently, this facility provides office space for the administration, recreation and park maintenance staff. Along with the Kids Cave program, a majority of the indoor recreation programs are held at the Parks and Recreation Center.
The Parks and Recreation Department manages and maintains the current rink as a six-month operation and is home to hockey programs from Bangor High School, John Bapst High School, Hampden Academy and the Maine Junior Black Bears youth hockey program.
The city is also looking for feedback from the public on how to move forward.
Topics will look at the following range of options:
Public feedback can be submitted online via two surveys created by BerryDunn. Click here to be redirected to these surveys. The deadline to submit feedback online is May 31.
"Sawyer Arena started as an outdoor hockey rink in the early 1990s."
"The current building was a former National Guard Armory with original construction during the late 1930s or early 1940s" Which is it or are these two SEPARATE facilities? Confused.
