Mainebiz took home first place in the 2022 Better Newspaper Competition for racial, ethnic or gender issue coverage by a specialty publication, for a cover story by Senior Writer Renee Cordes.
The winning story, "Fighting for Equity," explores how female entrepreneurs in Maine are beating the odds to raise capital. The article was published in the Nov. 29, 2021, print edition of Mainebiz, with a focus on banking and finance.
The contest was sponsored by the New England Newspaper and Press Association, the professional trade association for newspapers in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Vermont.
A total of 1,977 entries were submitted from 110 publications, according to Linda Conway, NENPA's executive director. A full list of the winners and judges' comments will be published later this week.
Mainebiz also received two awards for design work by Art Director Matt Selva.
Selva took home second place for overall design of a niche product for the 2021 Mainebiz Fact Book, whose cover depicted a bird resembling the twitter logo behind the open door of a cage, along with a Maine street scene.
Fact Book is an annual publication, and the 2023 edition is currently in production and scheduled for publication on Aug. 28.
Selva also received third place for front-page design for the Nov. 1, 2021, of Mainebiz, featuring the headline "Electric Avenue" in a typeface evoking illuminated neon lights.
That cover featured a photograph by longtime Mainebiz photographer Tim Greenway, for Cordes’ feature about Maine's uptick in electric cars.
Selva said the design was inspired by a combination of 1980s movie posters for films like "Road House" and "Cocktail," and “making lightsabers in Photoshop in my youth.”
Cordes also had '80s pop culture in mind with a headline that pays homage to Eddy Grant's famous song with a rock-reggae beat.
"We appreciate the awards. The team works hard and we are grateful to NENPA for the recognition," said Peter Van Allen, editor of Mainebiz.
Mainebiz, led by Publisher Andrea Tetzlaff, is owned by New England Business Media, which also publishes the Worcester (Mass.) Business Journal; the Hartford (Conn.) Business Journal; and New Haven Biz, in Connecticut.
