Bangor to get new high-speed Internet access

Two Maine companies recently announced plans to increase access to high-speed Internet access in the greater Bangor area.

Lewiston-based Oxford Networks over the weekend announced it will invest $4 million to build a fiber-optic network in downtown Bangor and Brewer to provide business customers with Internet access significantly faster than DSL service, according to Matthew Jancovic, Oxford Network's director of marketing. He said the service is expected to be available by next May and could be expanded to include residential customers in the future. Jancovic said Oxford Networks also plans to invest in a fiber-optic network in Waterville that would be up and running for business customers by the fall of 2008.

Meanwhile, on Friday, VVD Networks, a wireless Internet service provider in Bangor, said it would expand to offer high-speed Internet service to residential and business customers in rural communities in the greater Bangor area, according to a press release. The company, which is slightly more than a year old and currently has 100 customers, owns five towers in Bangor, Dedham, Orrington, Dixmont and Clifton, and plans to install three more before the end of the year.
