A Bar Harbor restaurant and store owner has been arrested on charges of theft by deception and negotiating a worthless instrument for allegedly stealing $52,000 by writing fraudulent checks.
Jennifer Lozano, owner of Parkside Restaurant and retail store Best of Bar Harbor, is accused of writing bad checks for several thousand dollars each with one bank account, depositing them into bank accounts established for the businesses, then, quickly withdrawing the funds before the checks bounced, according to the Bangor Daily News. Lozano in October allegedly wrote the checks using an account at a bank branch in Ellsworth, deposited them into a Camden National Bank account and then withdrew the money. Camden National notified the police of the fraudulent withdrawals, and the bank has not recovered any of the $52,000 from Lozano.
Conviction for the class B charges is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
