Barclaycard plans to hire about 200 people by the end of next year, but the company’s recent expansion announcement has prompted a call center that shares a building with Barclaycard in Wilton to announce it will close in December, laying off an undisclosed number of workers.
The Kennebec Journal reported Sykes is listed in a Maine Department of Labor 2012 tally as the ninth-largest employer in Franklin County. Barclaycard is listed as the 12th largest. Both are labeled by the department as having up to 500 employees.
A spokesman for Sykes declined to tell the paper how many employees would be laid off, but said the national call center company would allow affected workers to apply to work from home.
The Barclaycard expansion will take over space now occupied by Sykes. The company said it plans to hire 100 workers by the end of this year and another 100 by the end of 2014.
The company provides co-branded credit card services to around 40 companies, including L.L.Bean and Travelocity.
