Just in time to help with summer reading lists, bookstore chain Barnes & Noble will be opening near the Maine Mall in South Portland.
The new branch will occupy the former site of a Bed Bath & Beyond at 200 Running Hill Road. Barnes & Noble will join the busy shopping area that also includes competitor Books-A-Million, at 430 Gorham Road.
In a phone message, Barnes & Noble said the new branch will hold a grand opening on May 1. There's already signage on the storefront, reading "Barnes & Noble coming soon," and workers are busy fitting out the space and stocking books.
This will be the third Barnes & Noble store in Maine. Last summer, the chain opened its second at Brunswick’s Merrymeeting Plaza. That store was Barnes & Noble's first to open in the state since 1995.
Previously, the only store was in Augusta and the branch next-nearest to Maine was at the Crossings shopping center in Newington, N.H.
Today, Barnes & Noble operates roughly 600 bookstores nationwide, more than twice the number of its major competitor, Books-A-Million.
Barnes & Noble has yet to release official information regarding the South Portland launch, and did not immediately respond to questions from Mainebiz.
Since 2019, Barnes & Noble has been owned by a New York private equity firm, Elliott Investment Management.
