Bars open until 2 am? Why not, LePage proposes

Gov. Paul LePage has proposed a bill that would let restaurants and bars serve alcohol for an extra hour past the currently mandated last call time.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the bill calls for a pilot program that would allow establishments to serve alcohol until 2 a.m. The pilot program would begin when the bill becomes enacted and would last through Oct. 12 on Columbus Day.

Based on the legislation’s language, the newspaper noted that the bill may intend to give bars and restaurants a boost in sales during the tourist season. However, some people are raising concerns about the measure’s potential impact on noise, police staffing and workers.
