Baxter State Park to accept land donation

Baxter State Park officials are expected today to accept a donation of 143 acres around Katahdin Lake from an Old Town-based timber management company.

Huber Resources Corp. last week offered to donate the land to the park, and the Baxter State Park Authority plans to formally approve the gift today, according to the Portland Press Herald. The parcel is one of two that still remains in private hands and is valued at around $1 million. It’s the first donation of land in the park’s history.

Huber Resources manages approximately 600,000 acres of timberland formerly owned by the Huber family. The company has sold the majority of the land to New Hampshire-based investment firm Conservation Forestry LLC, but continues to manage it.
