Representatives from the U.S. Postal Service spoke to a packed room in Brewer last night to explain its controversial proposal to close its Eastern Maine Processing and Distribution facility in Hampden, a move that would impact 42 jobs.
According to the Bangor Daily News, about 350 people turned out for the meeting, as well as U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe, who both spoke against consolidating Hampden's operations with the processing center in Scarborough. The senators questioned whether the USPS's consolidation plan would generate the necessary cost savings or enhance efficiency or competitiveness. In September, USPS released a nationwide plan to close rural post offices and consolidate operations in order to cut $20 billion in operating costs by 2015 to make a profit. USPS will not make any decisions until May 15.
USPS would save more than $7.5 million annually if it closed the Hampden facility, the paper reported.
