Skillful Home Recreation, a provider of recreation games and furniture, intends to move to new space on Preble Street in January following the conversion of its current home into a bowling alley.
A.J. Jones, part owner and general manager of Skillful Home Recreation, says the move from its current premises at 58 Alder St. will allow for a more modern, larger and updated showroom for its inventory, and greater visibility. "We think it will be a more appropriate retail location," Jones told Mainebiz.
The move coincides with plans submitted by Bowl Portland LLC represented by state Sen. Justin Alfond and Charles Mitchell to convert the two-story brick building and attached warehouse into a 12-lane, 10-pin bowling center, with a 50-seat restaurant/bar and a stage for live music.
The pair, hoping to ride bowling's rising popularity among young people, have a 10-year lease and plan to spend $900,000 converting the building into a bowling center, reported the Portland Press Herald.
A hearing on the plan is scheduled tonight before the city's planning board.
