City councilors in Belfast approved a new boatyard's controversial plan to build a 55-foot-tall building at the former Stinson Seafood property.
At a special meeting, councilors unanimously supported Front Street Shipyard's proposal for the five-story building to store and repair large boats, the Bangor Daily News reported. Some residents opposed its size and location, arguing the building would block views of the harbor. But councilors voted in favor of the building at Front Street's preferred location, which allows more room to handle larger boats.
Front Street Shipyard, a venture launched by officials from Rockport Marine, Brooklin Boat Yard and Kenway Corp. in Augusta, plans to service and restore boats, as well as eventually build vessels. Work has already started at the 4-acre property, and the company plans to break ground on the building in the next two to three months, with construction ending by winter, according to the paper. Front Street plans to make portions of the facility, including a boat lift, operational by the summer.
