The city of Belfast is planning legal action against the developer of the former Stinson Seafood property claiming the property owner ignored requests to tear down the derelict structure and is in breach of a complex development agreement struck with the city five years ago.
City Attorney William Kelly told the Republican Journal he intended to file two suits this week against the owner and would-be developer of the property, Belfast Bridge LLC. The first suit would attempt to force the developer to tear down a derelict section of the property, which was supposed to be razed for code violations in December. The second suit attempts to rescind the agreement the city struck with the developer over zoning, leasing and intended future uses of the property after Belfast Bridge bought the property in 2005. "The best we can do, I think, is have the court declare they're in breach of ... everything," Kelly told the paper. "It's just an utter failure in terms of the contract."
Belfast Bridge LLC intended to develop condominiums, retail, office space and a proposed marina complex called Wakeag Landing at the site of cannery, which closed in 2001 after almost a century of operation.
