BIA gets new service to Ft. Lauderdale

Low-cost carrier Allegiant Air is adding new, nonstop service between Bangor International Airport and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., beginning Nov. 17.

The new flights will operate on Thursdays and Sundays between BIA and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, and fares will start as low as $84.99 one way for certain flights and travel days, according to a press release. In September 2009, Las Vegas-based Allegiant expanded its service to include twice-weekly nonstop service to the Tampa Bay area, and BIA officials at that time also encouraged the airline to add service to Fort Lauderdale. "This new route will simplify and expedite travel to one of our region's most popular destinations," BIA Director Rebecca Hupp said in the release. Allegiant Air first began servicing Bangor four years ago with service to Sanford, Fla., near Orlando, according to the Bangor Daily News.

While BIA has seen passenger numbers rise so far this year compared to last year, Allegiant's numbers have dipped slightly, according to the airport's July report, the most recent available. Allegiant has seen 43,381 passengers year to date, a 16% drop from the same six-month period last year. Total plane landings have also dropped 16% from 194 last year to 163 this year.
