After four decades in business, one of Maine's largest architecture and engineering firms is adding new owners.
Oak Point Associates in Biddeford said Tuesday it promoted eight longstanding associates to principals in the firm: Matthew Albert, Tyler Barter, Allison Towne DiMatteo, Peter Dunn, Scott Hughes, Sarah Smith, Robbie Tillotson, and Kenneth Weston.
Oak Point Associates was founded in 1979 by President Rob Tillotson and has been under his sole ownership ever since. The transition is a way to diversify ownership and enable the firm to strengthen its current markets while exploring new ones, he said in a news release.
“There is a really strong employee culture at Oak Point, which is one of the reasons why I made the decision to promote from within rather than consider selling to an outside entity,” he said.
The firm has 80 employees in a variety of architecture and engineering disciplines. In addition to its Biddeford base, Oak Point has an office in Portsmouth, N.H. In the most recent Mainebiz list of Maine's largest architecture firms, it is ranked No. 3, with revenue of $9.8 million.
Matthew Albert has been the head of Oak Point’s mechanical engineering department for 12 years and has 30 years of building design and construction experience with a deep knowledge of building HVAC and control systems. He will continue to expand his role in leadership of the firm’s engineering disciplines.
Tyler Barter is a project manager and architect with 20 years of experience in the K-12 and higher education markets. During his 17 years at Oak Point, he has led the programming and design of facilities throughout Maine. He is a strong supporter of sustainable design and looks to advance the firm’s commitment to healthy and energy efficient buildings. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects.
Allison Towne DiMatteo is a landscape architect and project manager with over 25 years of experience on a range of project and client types. In her 16 years at Oak Point, she has also taken a leadership role in the firm’s business development and marketing efforts, supervising the development of a new company website and the implementation of a marketing and business development database.
Peter Dunn is a structural engineer who has taken on increasing leadership roles in the firm over his 36-year tenure. He currently manages and oversees the projects under Oak Point’s Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity contracts with the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard. He is a member of the Society of American Military Engineers.
Scott Hughes is a leader in Oak Point’s architectural design group. With over 26 years of design experience as an architect and project manager, his focus concentrates on the government market sector for the firm. He has extensive building design and construction experience and uses this knowledge to mentor younger design professionals.
Sarah Smith is a leader in Oak Point’s interior design group and is an accredited learning environment planner. She has over 25 years of professional experience collaborating with clients designing and planning a variety of educational, workplace and government spaces that balance their functional and creative needs. She’s been at Oak Point 22 years.
Robbie Tillotson is Oak Point's head of information technology. Over the past 22 years, he has transitioned into the role of acquiring, implementing and maintaining the firm's hardware and software systems. He also manages the firm's shared data network across the two offices, and executes enhancements that continue to improve employees' ability to thrive in a remote working environment.
Kenneth Weston joins the leadership team at Oak Point after 24 years with the firm. His architectural design strength, commitment to client satisfaction, and collaborative team approach have contributed to the firm’s culture and success. As principal, he plans to continue to push the firm’s explorations into relevant, evocative design solutions.
