Biddeford mill now housing complex

A former textile mill in Biddeford is now the site of 66 housing units, following more than a year of renovation work.

A ceremony held yesterday celebrated the opening of the new Mill at Saco Falls, the former Laconia Mill No. 1 building and part of the Riverdam Mill complex that has become the city's first mill building to be entirely converted to housing, according to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. The building contains one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, 40 of which are low-income units that will be available for rents about $250 below the market price of about $800 to $1,000 a month. Fifty-five of the 66 units are already rented. The $14 million development benefited from $3 million in historic tax credits from the state and $1.5 million in subsidies from MaineHousing, as well as federal stimulus dollars.

Developer Nathan Szanton bought the 80,000-square-foot building from Riverdam Mill complex owner Stephen Goodrich in March 2009 for an undisclosed amount. Szanton has also proposed turning part of Bates Mill No. 2 in Lewiston into 55 apartments.
