Bigelow and UMiss form marine research partnership

East Boothbay-based Bigelow Laboratory has formed a partnership with a branch of the University of Mississippi's pharmacy program dedicated to using marine research to develop new pharmaceutical products.

The partnership, announced in a press release, will combine Bigelow's ocean research skills with the university's programs in natural product development, medicinal chemistry and general pharmaceutical sciences.

Larry Walker, director of the National Center for Natural Product Research at the University of Mississippi, said in a prepared statement that the development of natural products from the ocean is "still a largely unexplored natural resource."

The collaboration will include molecular exploration of natural products as sources for new pharmaceuticals and research and development of anti-infective and anti-cancer agents from aquatic sources.

The partnership also will include participation from the University's National Institute for Undersea Science and Technology.
