Bill seeks limits on Airbnb rentals in Maine
Four state lawmakers and a group of innkeepers are pushing for legislation that would place restrictions on short-term home rentals listed on websites like Airbnb.
The Portland Press Herald reported that the bill, LD 436, would require most people offering short-term home rentals to abide by the same rules as hotels, inns and bed-and-breakfasts. That means lodging facilities of all sizes would have to apply for an innkeeper’s license from the state, which requires hosts to meet several state standards. The newspaper noted that meeting such standards would be costly and could cut down on Airbnb listings as a result.
Proponents of the bill said that short-term home rentals are putting innkeepers at a competitive disadvantage and pose a safety risk because they are unregulated. An Airbnb spokesman told the newspaper that the company is “working with leaders across the globe on clear, fair laws so people can share their homes while contributing to their communities.”
