Biofuels mandate floated

A Bangor legislator has submitted a bill that would require Maine heating oil to contain small amounts of biofuel, in an effort to jumpstart the industry.

Rep. Steve Butterfield is proposing that all heating oil sold in the state contain a small amount of fuel from renewable sources beginning in July 2011, according to the Bangor Daily News. The proposal, developed with the Maine Energy Marketers Association -- formerly the Maine Oil Dealers Association -- would mandate that all No. 2 home heating oil contain 2% of biofuel, with provisions allowing the governor to suspend it if the price rises more than 20% above market price for standard fuel, or if there isn't enough biofuel in Maine to support the 2% rule. Butterfield is hoping the regulation would jumpstart the growth of the state's biofuel industry, he told the paper.

The Legislature will consider the bill early next year.
